Reporting on what matters accelerates Lemont’s strategic plan
A thriving suburb of Chicago, Illinois, the Village of Lemont is an attractive place to live, raise a family and start a new business. Residents are proud of their rich heritage and small-town charm. They also enjoy all the modern conveniences of a big city with award-winning schools, abundant recreational opportunities and multimodal transportation options.
Who can take credit? A village leadership team that’s punching way above its weight. While Lemont serves a population of about 17,000, it has a strategic plan and management reporting framework that’s the envy of the nation’s largest cities. The senior leadership team relies on Envisio to fuel its strategic plan, accelerate city hall performance and achieve better outcomes for residents.
Forces of change transform strategic planning
The Village of Lemont, like many suburbs, is facing significant change. Some positive, such as a growing population and transforming retail environment; and some more challenging, like aging infrastructure and mounting financial pressures from the State. When Mayor John Egofske was elected in 2017, the time was right to revisit the strategic plan.
“We had a lot of change in the community including a new mayor and three trustees. So, we recommended building a new strategic plan,” explained George Schafer, the Village Administrator for Lemont.
“This time, I wanted to do something different and build a more comprehensive strategic plan. I also wanted to collect more data, for a couple of reasons. First, data would help the Board make the most informed decisions possible in setting their priorities and outcomes. Second, data would support staff by providing a really good foundation for moving the organization forward and propelling performance.”
In August of 2017, the Lemont Village Board and senior leadership team began developing the FY 2018-2021 Strategic Plan. The process started by refreshing Lemont’s vision, mission and core values.
